Leahy: “We Knew”

Patrick Leahy

Senator Patrick Leahy, speaking to Attorney General, Alberto Gonzales, about the 2002 deportation of Maher Arar at yesterday’s hearing of the United States Senate: “We knew damn well if he went to Canada he wouldn’t be tortured. He’d be held and he’d be investigated. We also knew damn well if he went to Syria, he’d be tortured. And it’s beneath the dignity of this country — a country that has always been a beacon of human rights — to send somebody to another country to be tortured. You know and I know that has happened a number of times in the past five years by this country. It is a black mark on us.”

It’s a damn shame this kind of courage can’t be demonstrated in politics more often. One has to wonder if this kind of common sense would be more prevalent if there were a Democrat sitting in the Office of the President.

If there was a Democratic president, I think there might be more speeches like that one, but the incidents themselves would still be happening.

You’re probably right, Jodi. I guess I’m just an optimist sometimes. :D
